Kepundung

This is another one of those fruits that the Balinese simply love to snack on but which, for some reason, has never become popular with tourists. It is not available in hotels but during the dry season great bunches of them are sold in the markets, the stems tied up with bamboo twine.

The round fruit is yellowish-green, with tan splotches and a smooth skin. The skin is tough and encases two to four pods that are shaped like segments of a sphere. A papery white membrane with a slightly fibrous white core separates the segments. Each pod consists of soft and juicy pulp, similar to that of a grape. The flesh is white, translucent, and contains a seed.

The taste is a mixture of tart and sweet. The fruit is usually popped into the mouth whole and swallowed, seeds and all, and the skin is then discarded.
